ADIL - (1,500 but looks 15) Adil lives with the Nortons, sharing their busy lives when he isn’t in his lamp. He’s presented to the outside world as an exchange student but in the house he's treated like one of the family. He never fails to intrigue visitors, however, with his flowery language and bizarre historical references.

EMMA NORTON - (14 years old) Emma is the younger sister and the impulsive, creative one of the pair. She lives for fashion, friends and parties. Her dream is to work with a top designer and one day have her name on the label of the clothes everyone has to have.
School bores her silly: tests, homework, long hours. If she could go to school at the times that suited her, doing the subjects that interested her (english, art, music) with the teachers she liked, she'd have top marks.

SOPHIE NORTON – (15 years old) Sophie is the eldest daughter and she’s passionate about what makes things tick. She's curious about the world and interested in everything from the anatomy of the red ant to the conquest of space.
Sophie loves school because she's always learning things. Her favorite lessons are physics, chemistry, history and geography. She wants to go into higher education to study as many subjects as possible, and to learn as many languages as possible.

PHILIP NORTON - Emma and Sophie’s father is an industrial designer; he works at home in his workshop in the garage on new and often unusual designs for everything from furniture to toys to sunglasses. Being at home means he can keep an eye on his teenage girls. Philip is a widower who dotes on Sophie and Emma; he has come to think of Adil as being a bit like the son he never had.
Though he’s always around the house, Philip is often distracted as he tries to come up with a new design. That leaves the girls free to get into trouble…
